The Lamar University Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics is designed to offer you an extensive program as preparation for graduate study or employment and to recognize you who choose to pursue a more demanding program. You'll have the opportunity to develop greater breadth and depth in your mathematical programs or to combine mathematics with a concentration in another scientific discipline.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics at Lamar University offers five concentrations. The General concentration offers the most flexibility and is appropriate for those who are undecided or studying another field simultaneously. The Applied concentration is best suited for those planning on going into business, industry, government or graduate school in applied areas. The Mathematics Education concentration is best suited for those preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary level in the public or private schools. Highly coordinated with the College of Education, this track concludes with student teaching and teaching certification. The Theoretical concentration is best suited for those planning to attend graduate school in mathematics in areas such as algebra, analysis, or topology. Finally, the Statistics concentration is best suited for those planning to work in industry in the area of statistics, to pursue a career as an actuary, or to attend graduate school in either statistics or actuarial fields.

Mathematics teaches patience, discipline, and step-by-step problem-solving and critical thinking skills, so that with a substantial maths background, your career options are virtually unlimited. Mathematical research and education are at the heart of some careers, while other careers utilize mathematics and its applications to build and enhance important work in the sciences, business, finance, manufacturing, communications, and engineering.
