Our combined master's and doctoral program in psychology prepares you to use science to make a meaningful impact after you graduate. We train students from all over the world in the use of applied research as a lever for understanding complex social problems and implementing social change. Our program has a curriculum that allows you to complete a master's degree on the way to a doctoral degree. You'll learn to use innovative conceptual and methodological tools while working closely in faculty teams with community partners to understand and solve social problems. Our faculty are clustered in five concentrations — applied developmental psychology, applied social psychology, community psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, and applied quantitative psychology — and provide you with a rich training experience in an apprenticeship model. With cohorts of 10 to 12 students each and a small faculty-to-student ratio, we will ensure that you have the support and experience you need to succeed. Our graduates are in high demand and you’ll leave our program prepared to work in a variety of applied research and academic settings, including private and public organizations, research institutes, and universities.

You'll learn how to conceptualize complex social problems using sophisticated theories grounded in the lived experiences of those most closely allied with these issues. Our training in applied research will prepare you to study and solve these problems working in the rich and messy contexts of everyday life, as well as learn how to communicate with community partners and the general public about these topics in ways that are scientifically accurate yet understandable and meaningful.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY?

Our graduates go on to positions all over the country, in a range of settings, from private and public organizations to research institutes and universities. Recent alumni have been hired at Stanford University, Harvard School of Public Health, Colorado State University, Brigham Young University Portland Public Schools, Oregon Departments of Education and Corrections, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Multnomah County Health Department, Amazon, Microsoft, NW Natural, NASA, the National Institute of Mental Health, Northwest Professional Consortium, Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, Oregon Geriatric Education Center, and at health insurance firms.

Graduate Program Learning Outcomes

1. Advanced Knowledge: Graduate students will have and be able to apply advanced knowledge in specialized areas defined by their graduate program.

2. Methods: Graduate students will have and be able to apply skills in appropriate methods of analysis, whether quantitative or qualitative, or both, to collect and integrate information in ways consistent with the highest standards of their discipline.

3. Research: Graduate students will conduct research that results in an original contribution to knowledge, according to the standards of their discipline, including as appropriate both independent and collaborative research, and in conformity with all standards for responsible conduct of research.

4. Pedagogy: Graduate students will participate in training for teaching and apply their skills in the classroom consistent with their disciplinary norms, in undergraduate or other settings in their own or other disciplines.

5. Communication: Graduate students will have and apply skills in scholarly communication, applied in oral, text, and digital formats consistent with the highest standards of their discipline.

為來自中國的學生設計 To be admitted to PSU for a master’s program, applicants must satisfy University requirements and be accepted by the academic department in which the graduate study will occur. Admission eligibility is based on receipt of a baccalaureate degree equivalent to a United States four-year bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized as an institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education in the relevant country or be regionally accredited within the U.S. Regular Admission: To be considered for regular admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or the equivalent (on the U.S. 4.0 scale). Applicants who have earned 9 or more letter-graded graduate credits must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent; this graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA. IELTS: 6.5 overall score with minimum sub scores of 6.5 in reading and writing, TOEFL score of Paper-based: 550 overall; 22 in writing with 20 in reading and listening, TOEFL score of Internet-based: Minimum overall score of 80 with minimum sub scores of 18 in reading and writing, PTE - Academic: 60 overall.
